This weekend I’ll be on my way to Berlin to see my sister and was wondering if oppo knew of any interesting things to do/see in Berlin. Im a big history nerd so museums are always good, as goes for car things but I doubt there will be many car related things there. Ideally any suggestions would be accessible by public transit (i.e. not way outside of the city) but for the most part Im just looking for some interesting things that might be easily overlooked (i.e. not the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Wall etc.) Thanks!

BMWs are like Chevrolets, taxis are big Mercedes and Rolls-Royce are all manual. They also speak a very difficult to understand language and they drink a lot of beer.

I was there for work last year... didn’t get to do much. Ask her if she knows anyone in c-base, if she does GET THEM TO TAKE YOU THERE. Pergamon Museum, I couldn’t go but it sounds awesome. Sign up in advance for the Reichstag. Lots of cool bookstores on Orianenstraße. Enjoy!

Trabant Museum. Pretty small, but cheap and cool.

Kinja'd!!!

The Christmas market is probably in full swing too, so hit that up.

Checkpoint Charlie has the Beetle that smuggled 55 people out of East Berlin. It’s also easy to go to via public transit.

It’s fun learning about how perspectives change around the world. I’ve spoken with Brits and the version of the American revolution that they teach over there is basically “they were being difficult so we allowed them to secede”

There was a really great pizza joint in Prinzlauerberg when I was there. Um, other than a general recommendation for any museums (Pergamon and the Reichstag, obviously) and the Dom, I don’t know I can offer much.

I’ve been at least four times to Berlin and I still feel like I haven’t seen a bit. There’s just so damn much to do.

Checkpoint Charlie Museum

Die Judische (The Jewish Museum) is a disturbingly, hauntingly beautiful building.

I’d suggest checking out some old cathedrals, too.

Hilarious passive aggression thing: in the air museum in Berlin, there’s a dredged-up Lancaster bomber engine in all its muddy, corroded glory. In the RAF museum, there’s a German Junkers engine, same thing. Although the RAF museum did also have a full English plane recovered from somewhere in a (cleaned up) boggy state.

Nazi museums and memorials! All of them. I must know because I’ll be in Berlin as well on Sunday and Monday with my history class. If you are looking for car stuff you might as well check out the Classic Remise or something, there is enough to keep you busy.

History has always varied according to where you stand.

Americans are taught that they won the 1812 war.

Russians fought in the Great Patriotic War and won it almost unaided, with the Normandy Landings being a distraction.

The Second World War reached its final phase only after D Day while the Germans were distracted on the Eastern Front

Napoleon was a great leader and only ever lost two unimportant battles.

Napoleon was a tyrannical megalomaniac and his defeat at Waterloo was the beginning of a century of peace and prospoerity

And so on and on.

Topography of terror is worth going to, though it’s mostly reading. It’s free and it seems like the Germans actively encourage their own people to go there and read about the atrocities of the Nazis.

Also recommend a quick trip to the Soviet Memorial in Treptower park of you're down that way and like that sort of thing. Large scale and very typical of the USSR.

I was in Berlin in 1989 (just before the wall fell) so I can’t say too much about the goings on now. There is a ton of history there (nerd here too). It’s almost helpful to pick what type. WW2, Prussian, etc.

Charlottenburg was pretty freaking amazing.

Kinja'd!!!

We did a tour of then-communist East Berlin. Another one that was stunning in a very very different sort of way was the Soviet war cemetery.

Kinja'd!!!

The architecture nerd in me would go back and see the old Templehoffer Airport which needs to be turned into an F1-WEC race track so badly it aches.
